BREAKING: Bush Admits Authorizing Secret Domestic Spying Program - "This is a highly classified program that is crucial to our national security. Its purpose is to detect and prevent terrorist attacks against the United States, our friends, and allies. Yesterday, the existence of this secret program was revealed in media reports after being improperly provided to news organizations."

BEFORE THIS ADMITTANCE, REPORTS WERE SWARMING...

Bush Approved Eavesdropping, Official Says - President Bush has personally authorized a secretive eavesdropping program in the United States more than three dozen times since October 2001, a senior intelligence official said Friday night.

Congress To investigate Bush secret domestic surveillance program - There is no doubt that this is inappropriate, declared Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He promised hearings early next year.

BUSH EVEN HAD THE CHANCE TO ADMIT IT, BUT HE DID NOT...

Bush won't confirm report NSA spied on Americans - Without confirming a report that he OK'd eavesdropping on U.S. citizens in 2002, President Bush defended his actions since September 11, 2001, saying he has done everything "within the law" to protect the American people.
That stance has given the administration leeway for decisive action, but it has come under severe criticism from some scholars and the courts.

The Good And Bad

From DailyKos.com:

Intelligent designers on Dover school board were swept out en masse by the city's voters. Eight sane Dems swept out eight crazy fundamentalists.

In Tucson Arizona, Dems took out two Republicans and reverted the city council to Democratic control. In Washington State, a measure closely watched by anti-tax zealots to repeal Washington's fuel tax was narrowly defeated.

In Maine (as noted already), an anti-gay ballot initiative actually failed. That's something you don't see every day. An anti-gay marriage amendment in Texas passed easily (even though it may hilariously invalidate every marriage).

In both New Jersey and Virginia Democrats gained seats in the state legislatures.

But I have to say, while this beats the losing we've experiened the last couple of years, this is still quite unsatisfying. Let's call it the appetizer.

2006 is the real target. We've got the momentum and a Republican Party reeling from its inability to govern. We can't let them regain their balance. We've got to keep them on the defensive, take advantage of every opening they provide to score additional points.

And let's not forget, voters rejected Schwarzenegger's bid to remake state government.

DeLay Is DeRanged

Tom DeLay was just SOOOOOOOO confident that he'd be let off of these charges against him. But oddly enough, now that the trial is trying to get under way, all DeLay wants to do is change things so they favor HIM! Perhaps that is why he was so sure he was going to win - because he thought he would be in an environment that supported him.

Now that he found out he is NOT in an environment that supports him and only him, he is doing all he can to change that.

First DeLay asked for a new lawyer.

And now, that's not enough for him. Now DeLay wants to be moved to another town:

Defense attorneys argue that DeLay has been vilified in liberal Travis County, which was split into three different congressional districts as a result of a redistricting map DeLay engineered.

Awwww... so DeLay finds himself in the same town he was so evil to redistrict to help the Republicans but now that it isn't working for HIM he wants a change! It's alright to mess with the Democrats, but as soon as it's not 100% fair to DeLay, things have to change?!?!

Puh-leeeeze!

Whats Going On With The Torture?

Could Bush and Cheney be at odds again? They both seem to disagree with each other, in a way.

Right now Bush is claiming the US doesn't use torture:

There's an enemy that lurks and plots and plans and wants to hurt America again," Bush said. "So you bet we will aggressively pursue them but we will do so under the law."

He declared, "We do not torture."

At the same time however, Cheney has been fighting against the anti-tourtre bill:

Over the past year, Vice President Cheney has waged an intense and largely unpublicized campaign to stop Congress, the Pentagon and the State Department from imposing more restrictive rules on the handling of terrorist suspects

Let us also not forget what Cheney did only a few days ago:

Vice President Dick Cheney made an unusual personal appeal to Republican senators this week to allow CIA exemptions to a proposed ban on the torture of terror suspects in U.S. custody, according to participants in a closed-door session.

Cheney in that meeting also said that the US doesn't torture, but than why is he fighting against this ban? Clearly he has a reason, but he's not speaking. I think we can all guess what it is though.

Religion Bows To Science, Kinda

Vatican: Faithful Should Listen to Science

A Vatican cardinal said Thursday the faithful should listen to what secular modern science has to offer, warning that religion risks turning into "fundamentalism" if it ignores scientific reason.

Cardinal Paul Poupard, who heads the Pontifical Council for Culture, made the comments at a news conference on a Vatican project to help end the "mutual prejudice" between religion and science that has long bedeviled the Roman Catholic Church and is part of the evolution debate in the United States.

The Vatican project was inspired by Pope John Paul II's 1992 declaration that the church's 17th-century denunciation of Galileo was an error resulting from "tragic mutual incomprehension." Galileo was condemned for supporting Nicolaus Copernicus' discovery that the Earth revolved around the sun; church teaching at the time placed Earth at the center of the universe.

"The permanent lesson that the Galileo case represents pushes us to keep alive the dialogue between the various disciplines, and in particular between theology and the natural sciences, if we want to prevent similar episodes from repeating themselves in the future," Poupard said.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Sadly, only 15% of Americans believe in Evolution. But remember that religion is based on fear. I am willing to bet that some, if not a lot of people who took the survey chose to say 'God' for fear of the unknown. Just in case there IS a hell, they want to SAY they believe in God when faced with the question so they don't go to eternal damn nation.

Also remember, this is a country that is getting more fat and more unhealthy. This is a country that is watching more TV each year. This country is keeping MTV in business, and sent Ashlee Simpson's CD to number one. This is a dumb country. It should be no surprise that if Americans can't understand something, or refuse to do the extensive reading and research needed to understand a lot of science, they shrug it off, and cave in to the fear which the Church's produce.

It also seems true that if something has yet to be explained by science, than these religious idiots will conclude that the only other reason for it has to be God. Hasn't history taught us anything? There has been plenty of things that were unexplainable up until a point where science finally tackled it. Not everything we know now was what we knew thousands of years ago. Year ago, gravity, the world being round, the sun revolving around the earth, photosynthesis, and thousands of other scientific findings were explained away by the mention of 'God' because no one knew anything else.

And just as those things have since been explained, so too will the creation of life. And we are much closer to understanding it that these religious idiots realize, because they refuse to pay attention to religion.

Scientists know they haven't been very savvy in explaining certain scientific theories. They haven't broken down science to a level that most Americans can actually understand. But they are working on that right now. And I'm glad Churches are finally telling their sheep to begin listening to science. Something tells me they realize they are going to be had, and they want to let their legions of idiots down slowly.

Or maybe the only people who had the time and were willing to take the survey were mid-western stay-at-home mom's, who seem to lean toward religion more so than not.

Maybe this pathetic trend will change soon.

But here are things I cant resist posting...

Lawyers in CIA-leak case say charges possible this week - Federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald appears to be laying the groundwork for indictments this week over the outing of a covert CIA operative, including possible charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, lawyers involved in case said on Sunday.

Colonel quits as fears grow for the safety of his men -A senior army officer serving in Iraq, who voiced concerns over a lack of armoured vehicles for his men, has resigned.
March Of The Penguins Director Strikes Back At Creationists - IT WOULD seem extraordinary that a film about penguins trekking 70 miles through sub-zero temperatures and 120mph winds could be seized upon by the American religious right as a parable about monogamy and creationism. But that was exactly what happened when March of the Penguins became the surprise hit at the American box office this year.

Yesterday, days before the film’s British premiere at The Times bfi London Film Festival next week, the director hit back at the commentators he believes have wilfully misread his film. “If you want an example of monogamy, penguins are not a good choice,” Luc Jacquet told The Times. “The divorce rate in emperor penguins is 80 to 90 per cent each year,” he said. “After they see the chick is OK, most of them divorce. They change every year.”
Biologists Step Up, Fight Back At Creationists - ''We shouldn't dismiss questions, even if some are ill-intentioned," says Marc Kirschner, founding chair of the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. ''But at the same time, we need to realize that science has real answers to these questions."

Far from being restricted to the fossil record, as creationists often imply, research in the last 25 years from molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, and embryology has added greatly to the existing evidence for evolution. ''There are all sorts of demonstrations of evolution going on all the time," notes John Gerhart, a biologist at the University of California, Berkeley.

Even so, Kirschner and Gerhart believe, some biologists and many science-literate general readers-not to mention a larger slice of the public-are unaware of the advances in the field. If Behe, for one, can question evolution, Kirschner and Gerhart contend, biologists have an increasing responsibility not only to explain evolution to the public, but to be fully aware of the evolutionary implications of their own work.

Most American Say Iraq 'Not Worth It', Disapprove Of Bush

Hi Guys,

Bush today had another one of his pathetic photo-ops to try once again, to gain support for the Iraq war by holding a televised video-phone conversation with soldiers currently in Iraq.

As I commented at ThinkProgress.org (which you can see at post number 48 here) I said the following.

This entire exchange was apparently scripted as CNN reported. The soldiers rehearsed their answers with Bush before hand, but were caught off guard when Bush strayed from the script to put in his own words. I’m guess the quote extracted by my fellow Philadelphian, Atrios, was what WASN’T on the script.

Man, these Bush photo-ops just become more pathetic every time. He continues to use the soldiers to gain support from the American people about the Iraq war. He holds televised speeches at Army bases, drops names of family members of solders, and now tries to hold a videophone conversation - but it had to be SCRIPTED.

And if it was scripted, you know that the soldiers were carefully picked depending on their loyalty to the president so they didn’t say anything the President doesn’t want the American people to hear.

Aahhrrg... Republicans Getting WORSE

House narrowly approves bill to HELP US refinerie

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a cliffhanger vote held open by Republican leaders until they won, the U.S. House of Representatives passed by two votes on Friday a bill clearing the way for U.S. oil refineries to expand.

The legislation, written by Republican Joe Barton of Texas, barely won approval despite dropping a White House-backed provision that would have gutted clean air rules to help refineries and coal-powered utilities.

In the first major House vote since Texan Tom DeLay was forced to step down as majority leader, Republicans won, 212-210, in a roll call that ran more than 40 minutes, far beyond the allotted five minutes.

Democrats in the chamber chanted "shame, shame, shame" as the final tally was announced.

When over two dozen Republicans initially voted no, DeLay, Barton, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and new Majority Leader Roy Blunt circled the chamber and cajoled the holdouts.

The palm-sweating vote switched from "yes" to "no" several times, but Republican Rep. Mike Simpson, the speaker pro tempore, did not gavel the vote closed until it swung in the Republicans' favor.

Several Democrats protested that the vote was being held open. "I am informed that every member of Congress who is in town has voted," Democratic whip Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland said at one point, when the tally was 210 yes, 214 no.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi also complained, saying the proceedings were bringing "dishonor to the House."

The bill aims to add 2 million barrels per day of capacity by offering abandoned military bases for refinery construction sites.

It also speeds up permits by giving the Energy Department more authority over the process, and offer federal insurance to refiners in case new projects are delayed.

The bill was prompted by hurricanes Rita and Katrina, which plowed through the heart of the U.S. energy producing region and shut offshore drilling rigs and refineries.

I posted this a whiiiiiiiile back, but in light of these indictments, I thought it fit to repost this again.

Also I LOVE listening to the new age song which plays in the trailer.

If you'd like to know, the song is called 'Moonrise', and it's by David Friedman. However, this version has some added melodies which aren't on the album version.. melodies that I WISH were on the album version. But oh well....

<embed allowScriptAccess="never"src="http://www.bushsbrain.com/images/trailers/BBTrailerHiRes.mov" width="320" height="255" autostart="false">

This movie should let you all know that films like this are NOT always propaganda. This should let you know that these movies CAN be true, as we are finally seeing today.

So the next time you hear 'conspiracy theory' think twice before dismissing it. Because theories CAN be proven.
October 7: The Beginning of CIA Leak Scandal, The Beginning of the End

Three years ago today, it all started.

On October 7, 2002, President Bush gave a speech in Cincinnati “in which he made the case for war.” According to Condoleezza Rice, “a line had been there about the uranium issue and Saddam Hussein seeking uranium in Africa. And Director Tenet had called Steve Hadley and he told him…he told him I don’t think you should put that in the president’s speech.”

The reference was removed from his speech that day, but famously reappeared in a 16-word sentence three months later during the President’s State of the Union address. (Bush: “The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”)

On July, 6, 2003, former Ambassador Joe Wilson wrote a column indicating that the Bush administration knew the claim was bogus in advance of the speech. The following day, the administration was forced to publicly acknowledge the President was wrong. The incident set into motion an aggressive effort at the White House to “slime” Wilson that culminated in a Robert Novak column which outed his wife, undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame. A criminal investigation followed, involving numerous administration officials, which is expected to conclude this month.

This morning, Karl Rove is scheduled to make his fourth appearance before the grand jury to answer questions about his involvement in the smear campaign. Three years after it all began, sources close to Rove say he and his legal team are “now genuinely concerned he could face [criminal] charges.”
Interesting how none of the officials will give us any details about the matter, and are also telling us to continue riding on the subways.
Interesting how their story conflicts where in one breath they say they warn about a specific threat, yet they don't know where or when or how we'll be attacked.
I am guessing this is another attempt to scare the public into supporting Bush again.
The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,” they say in The Gift of Scripture.

*snip*

The document shows how far the Catholic Church has come since the 17th century, when Galileo was condemned as a heretic for flouting a near-universal belief in the divine inspiration of the Bible by advocating the Copernican view of the solar system. Only a century ago, Pope Pius X condemned Modernist Catholic scholars who adapted historical-critical methods of analysing ancient literature to the Bible.

*snip*

They say the Church must offer the gospel in ways “appropriate to changing times, intelligible and attractive to our contemporaries”.

*snip*

They go on to condemn fundamentalism for its “intransigent intolerance” and to warn of “significant dangers” involved in a fundamentalist approach.

Bushs War On Terror Speech

So Bush made his little speech today.

Bush today, basically repeated what he said on CBS back in August 2004. Then he said "I don’t think you can win it.". In his war on terror speech today he said “…no conscience, bribe or act of appeasement will change or limit their plans for murder.”

First of all, this statement alone basically would be reason NOT to go to war - since it seems unwinnable. One has to wonder why Bush believes we’ll accept this anyway however. If this was actually the case, he would have said this to us in the first place, and that would have remained the same until now.

When you change your story this many times on why we should have invaded Iraq, it’s hard for people to say, “Alright, THIS is the true story.”

But even if this IS true - that the war in unwinnable, that still doesn’t justify us being there, because they were not a threat to the US. The only lie that made sense for our invasion was the WMD story, because only WMD would be a threat to us. Not a single excuse afterwards means we should send our soldiers over there.

This whole speech was confusing. He's using a reason to NOT go to war, as his reason TO go to war.

And I am getting really sick of this religious kind of way of presenting Iraq, because they ask us to have faith. To just TRUST him that things are going well despite what we see on TV. We have to believe what we can not see, what’s going on ‘behind the scenes’.

If only Bush could understand that with the way this Administration has been unravelling, it’s impossible to believe them anymore. He said he was a conservative, but he’s spent more than most US presidents, he’s expanded government by, I’ve been told 33% (if someone could supply me with a source on that, I’d appreciate it), we have DeLay and Frist, and Libby and Rove, and Cheney, and many others in the administration under all kinds of investigations…. and Bush wants us to TRUST HIM?

It’s not going to happen.

Don't Fear The Bird Flu

Everyone just CALM DOWN! You'r not going to be harmed.

Just like West Nile, and the killer African Bees... we always have to have some kind of SCARE. But nothing serious ever comes out of it - and already signs show that this scare is no different.

Right off the bat, all the sources who mention it could happen say just that.. it COULD happen. They don't even know WHEN it will start. Right now everything is speculation.

So how easilly can it get to humans? Let's look.

"Of the 16 subtypes [of avian influenza] that are known, only subtypes H5, H7 and H9 are known to be capable of crossing the species barrier from birds to humans. It is feared that if the avian influenza virus undergoes antigenic shift with a human influenza virus, the new subtype created could be both highly contagious and highly lethal in humans. Such a subtype could cause a global influenza pandemic, similar to the Spanish Flu that killed over 20 million people in 1918 (though a variety of sources quote average figures even higher, up to 100 million in some cases)." (Source: Answers.com)

That's right. There hasn't been anything like this since 1918. Just think how far we've come in the world of science to know how to combat these things.

Actually... there is SPECIFIC studies going on to combat the possibility of the bird flu.

"Vietnam has received a donation of 600,000 tablets of the bird flu drug Tamiflu from Taiwan and is planning to buy another 70,000 tablets for its national stockpile, health officials said Thursday.

Tamiflu is the only treatment so far proven effective against bird flu in humans." (Source: Associated Press)

And there is more.

"Providing enough vaccine to inoculate every Australian against pandemic bird flu would take about three months once a vaccine was approved, pharmaceutical manufacturer CSL said.

"'We should have enough to give every Australian a dose within three months,' Dr David said. 'It's a pretty quick process.'"(Source: The Age)

Let's check out the Center For Disease Control And Prevention's website and see what they have to say.

"The risk from bird flu is generally low to most people because the viruses occur mainly among birds and do not usually infect humans. However, during an outbreak of bird flu among poultry (domesticated chicken, ducks, turkeys), there is a possible risk to people who have contact with infected birds or surfaces that have been contaminated with excretions from infected birds. The current outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) among poultry in Asia (see below) is an example of a bird flu outbreak that has caused human infections and deaths. In such situations, people should avoid contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces, and should be careful when handling and cooking poultry. For more information about avian influenza and food safety issues." (Source: Center For Disease Control And Prevention)

How many people have actually been infected since January 2004? 52.
And how many people have died since January 2004? Only 39.
(Source: World Health Organization)

More people die of AIDS every day, and we KNOW that AIDS can spread among humans, and we don't have ANY vaccine for that. We have much more to worry about than this petty little bird flu virus. Unless you work on a chicken farm in China, you're probably gonna be ok.

But I worry about George Bush wanting to use the MILITARY to 'fight' the disease. He seems to want to use men with guns for EVERY situation! The DANGER is not in the disease folks... the DANGER is in the men who want to try and scare you and control you with this.

Notice the Terror Alert Level color system hasn't happened in a long time. They realize that system doesn't work to scare us. But they can scare us again with a NEW and DIFFERENT kind of danger.

You can run your car with NO GAS right now if you have a vechical with a diesel tank.

Right now, as we speak, there are vehicles on the road running off of cooking oil - and I am NOT making this up. Even Willie Nelson travels the country in a van run ONLY on cooking oil.

Truth is... and again this is not made up... you could walk into any fast food chain and ask for the used oil they are going to throw out. You could use that oil right there to run your car. And chances are they will give it to you for free!

The government is lying to us, trying to make us believe that the ability to run cars on only corn oil and cooking oil is years away. But it's not - it's happening right now.

The magic word is biodiesel.
1) Make your own biodiesel - Biodiesel is much cleaner than fossil-fuel diesel ("dinodiesel"). It can be used in any diesel engine with no need for modifications -- in fact diesel engines run better and last longer with biodiesel. And it can easily be made from a common waste product, like used cooking oil!

Time for a little lesson. Did you know that storms are given names once they reach a certain level? The names begin with 'A' and go down the alphabet. This means, for this hurricane season, Katrina was the 11th major storm. Rita was number 18. Now we just had Hurricane Stan, and it appears Hurricane Tammy is next! That's because as endless as this storm season seems to be, we still have a bit to go. So be prepared.
PS: Remember, a few posts back I talked about how Tom DeLay seemed to have a few gay mannerisms, including the 'limp wrist'? I found the picture that made me think that. See it here.
A former Abramoff associate who was questioned by the FBI in August says, "They had a lot of e-mails, a lot of traffic between our office and DeLay's office."
